Sea, Land, Air: Migration and Labor

Filipinos work everywhere. On the high seas, up in the air, and on the ground. Nurse, sailor, singer, farmer, teacher, maid. These are the icons of globalized Filipino labor today. But where do they come from?

 

“Sea, Land, Air: Migration and Labor” locates these icons in the circuits of labor that emanate from the Philippines’ and its diaspora’s colonial and imperial histories. At the same time, the exhibition questions what is truthful and what is fictional in the narration of these imperial relations.

 

Over the summer of 2013, we unfolded “Sea, Land, Air” in groups designed to highlight the connections and complications that the scholarly and creative works collected here illuminate.

Deirdre was born in Germany and has lived in Hawai’i, Seattle, and Manila. Her engagement with the Philippines and Filipino America has found a variety of expressions over the years, most recently as an Assistant Professor of Philippine Studies at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, where she is currently based. In addition to Philippine history and cultures, her scholarly interests include theories of religion, histories and theories of the mass media, cultures of U.S. imperialism, and historical and ethnographic writing. Daniel Miller

b. 1954

Daniel Miller was born in London in 1954. He is currently based at the Department of Anthropology with University College, London. He is the author or editor of thirty-five books dealing with different aspects of the anthropology of consumption, material culture and new media.

Mirca Madianou

Mirca Madianou is Senior Lecturer in the Department of Media and Communication, University of Leicester. From 2004 to 2011, she was Newton Trust Lecturer in Sociology at the University of Cambridge and Fellow of Lucy Cavendish College. She holds a Ph.D. from the London School of Economics. She has published extensively on the social consequences of new media and mediation especially in relation to processes of migration, transnational relationships and networks. She is the author of Mediating the Nation: News, Audiences and the Politics of Identity (Routledge, 2005) and Migration and New Media (with Daniel Miller, Routledge, 2011) and co-editor of Ethics of Media (with Nick Couldry and Amit Pinchevski, 2013). Between 2007 and 2011, she was Principal Investigator on the Economic and Social Research Council-funded project "Migration, ICTS and transnational families," a comparative ethnographic study of Filipino and Caribbean transnational families and their uses of new communication technologies. She continues to work on Philippine migration and the role of digital media in transforming migrant networks.

Wawi Navarroza is a photographer/multi-disciplinary artist from Manila, Philippines. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from De La Salle University, Manila and attended continuing education at the International Center of Photography, New York. Recently, Navarroza completed her scholarship at the Istituto Europeo di Design, Madrid under the program European Master of Fine Art Photography.

Her work with contemporary photography has taken shape in highly-stylized symbolic mise-en-scène and tableau vivants, shifting to her more recent interest in landscape, constructed still life, and installation. Her landscape photographs propose a familiar 'other place' that opens up to fabricated emotional space that seems to be carved out by both personal and collective memory and amnesia.

Navarroza has exhibited widely in the Philippines and internationally. She has participated at the 2012 Tokyo Month of Photography, presented by Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography; the Asian Art Biennale, in Taichung, Taiwan (2011); the annual touring exhibition "CUT: New Photography from South East Asia," by Valentine Willie Fine Art (VWFA) Kuala Lumpur; ASEAN-Korea’s "Emerging Wave" Asian Contemporary Photography Exhibition in Seoul, Korea (2010); and "Verso Manila: contemporary art from the Philippines" in Turin, Italy (2009). She has also been shown at Angkor Photography Festival Cambodia, Noorderlicht Photography Festival Holland, and PhotoIreland.

Recent solo exhibits include "ULTRAMAR, Pt.1: Gathered Throng, Falling Into Place" (2012) and "Dominion" (2011), at Silverlens Gallery, Manila, and "On Landscapes and Some Dislocations" at Galería Patrick Domken, Cadaqués, Spain. She has received a number of awards, such as the Cultural Center of the Philippines' Thirteen Artists Awards Triennial (2012), Lumi Photographic Art Awards, Helsinki (2011), and she was a finalist for the prestigious Sovereign Asian Art Prize (2011) and Singapore Museum Signature Art Prize (2011). Other awards include International Photography Awards (2010), Portfolio Preis (2010, Germany), and Prix de la Photographie Paris (2009). She has staged two award-winning solo exhibitions: “POLYSACCHARIDE: The Dollhouse Drama” (2005) and “SATURNINE: A Collection of Portraits, Creatures, Glass, and Shadow” (2007), which was cited Winner at the Ateneo Art Awards 2007, Philippines. In 2009, Navarroza was awarded the first Asian Cultural Council-Silverlens Fellowship Grant to further her research and practice in New York City.

Her work has been shown in institutions such as the National Museum of the Philippines, Metropolitan Museum of Manila, Mongolian National Modern Art Gallery, Hangaram Museum, Korea, National Museum of Fine Arts, Taichung, Taiwan, and Fries Museum of Contemporary Art, Netherlands.

Navarroza has also worked as a lecturer of photography at De La Salle University and as an independent curator. She also sings for a post-punk rock band called The Late Isabel. In the past few years she has based herself in Madrid, Barcelona and Cadaqués, Spain. Currently, Navarroza is working and living in Manila, Philippines.

Clement C. Camposano, Ph.D.

b. 1966

Dr. Clem Camposano was born in 1966 in Iloilo City, the Philippines. He is presently based in Manila. He earned his Ph D. in Philippine Studies (Anthropology, 2009) from the University of the Philippines, and his current research interest is in the anthropology of migration, with emphasis on the transnationalization of the contemporary Filipino household. He holds an M.A. in Political Science from the University of the Philippines - Diliman (1992) and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and History from the University of the Philippines - Visayas (1986). Dr. Camposano has published articles in peer-reviewed journals and has presented academic papers in international conferences. He sits in the board of the Philippine Anthropological Association and is an active member of the Philippine Studies Association. He is a senior faculty member at the University of Asia and the Pacific (UA&P) where he teaches courses in social science research and Philippine history and culture. Dr. Camposano began his academic career right after the EDSA Revolution with faculty appointments at the West Visayas State University in 1986 and subsequently at the University of the Philippines in the Visayas in 1997. A person of diverse interests, he is presently the Chairman of the Philippine Center for Civic Education and Democracy (PCCED), a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of citizenship and civic engagement among various sectors in Philippine society.

Dr. Jonathan Corpus Ong

Dr. Jonathan Corpus Ong is Assistant Professor in Sociology at Hong Kong Baptist University. He received his Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Cambridge in 2011. Jonathan has published his work on media and migration, media ethics, and mediated political participation in Media, Culture & Society, Television & New Media, and Communication, Culture & Critique. He was the first Graduate Student Representative of the Popular Communication Division of the International Communication Association. His first book The Poverty of Television is forthcoming from Anthem Press. In July 2013, he joins the University of Leicester (UK) as Lecturer in Media and Communications.

Jason Vincent A. Cabañes

b. 1981

Jason was born in 1981, in Quezon City, The Philippines. He is presently a final year Institute of Communication Studies  Ph.D. Scholar at the University of Leeds, UK; he is also a Lecturer in Media Studies and the Program Coordinator of the Master’s in  Journalism program at the Department of Communication, Ateneo de Manila University, The Philippines. He was previously an Association of Southeast Asian Nations Research Fellow at the Asia Research Institute, National University of Singapore and a consultant of the Communication for Governance and Accountability Program of The World Bank. His scholarly works include articles in the internationally peer-reviewed journals Media, Culture and Society (forthcoming), New Media and Society, and Southeast Asia Research; an entry in the Encyclopaedia of Social Networking; and a chapter in the book Changing Media, Changing Societies (Asian Media Information and Communication Centre, 2009). His present research interests are on social and mediational approaches to migration, multiculturalism, and politics.

Mariano “Manny” Montelibano

Mariano “Manny” G. Montelibano III is a Visayan media artist who focuses his works on the psychology of current social, political, economic, and religious structures. In the Philippines, his works have been exhibited in the National Museum of the Filipino People, Cultural Center of the Philippines, Metropolitan Museum of Manila, Museo Iloilo, Visayas Islands Visual Arts Exhibit and Conference, Vargas Museum, Ateneo Art Gallery, Galleria Duemila, NOVA Gallery, Museo Negrense de La Salle, and Fort Santiago-Intramuros. He has also been part of exhibitions in Seoul, Korea; Hong Kong, Spain, Germany, New Zealand, Canada, and France.

He is a video and sound installation artist, film and stage director, editor, and technical specialist, and he teaches in the University of St. La Salle in Bacolod City. Currently, he is affiliated with National Commission for Culture and the Arts of the Philippines, Black Artists in Asia Association, Crossing Negros Cultural Foundation Inc., Produksyon Tramontina Inc., Bacollywood Organization, and VIVA ExCon Org.

Manny is based in the south of the City of Bacolod, the province of Negros Occidental, Philippines.

Michelle Dizon

b. 1977

Artist, filmmaker, and writer, Michelle Dizon, was born and raised in Los Angeles as part of the Philippine diaspora.  Her video installations, films, and writing focus on subjectivity as it intersects with the histories of colonialism and its legacies of immigration, diaspora, and globalization.  Currently, she is at work on a feature-film and large-scale installation entitled Perpetual Peace that addresses U.S. imperialism, militarization, globalization, and war in the Philippines.  She is also revising a book entitled Vision in Ruins that explores visuality in an era of neoliberal globalization.  

She has exhibited and lectured internationally at venues such as the Center for Feminist Studies in Zagreb, Croatia; Jeu de Paume in Paris, France; Caixaforum in Barcelona, Spain; Casa Asia in Madrid, Spain; Copenhagen International Documentary Film Festival in Copenhagen, Denmark; Metropolitan Museum of Art in Manila, Philippines; Vargas Museum in Manila, Philippines; Para/Site Art Space in Hong Kong, China; Galleryloop in Seoul, Korea; Tate Modern in London, England; Human Rights Center in Berkeley, United States; CUE Art Foundation in New York, United States; Vox Populi in Philadelphia, United States; and Redcat Gallery in Los Angeles, United States. She has received fellowships from the Human Rights Center, the Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs, the University of California Initiative for Research in the Arts, and the Fulbright Association. 

Dizon is the incoming Co-Chair of the Visual Art Program at the Vermont College of Fine Arts, and she is Visiting Faculty in the Photography and Media Program at the California Institute of the Arts.  She earned an M.F.A. in Art with emphasis in Interdisciplinary Studio from the University of California, Los Angeles, and a Ph.D. in Rhetoric with designated emphases in Film and Women, Gender, and Sexuality from the University of California, Berkeley.  She lives and works between Los Angeles, California and Davao City, Mindanao, The Philippines.

Eric Estuar Reyes

b. 1965

Eric Estuar Reyes is currently Associate Professor of Asian American Studies at California State University at Fullerton.  He was born in Manila, Philippines in 1965, spent his childhood in Hawai’i (USA), Naples (Italy), Rhode Island, New Orleans, LA (USA), and San Diego, CA (USA).  In the U.S., he has lived in Santa Cruz, Providence, San Francisco, and Los Angeles.  He received his Ph.D. in American Civilization from Brown University, his M.A. in Urban Planning from the University of California, Los Angeles, and his B.A., with majors in Mathematics and Modern Society and Social Thought, from the University of California, Santa Cruz.

His research interests focus on race and space with specific attention to Filipino America, queerness, urban spaces in the U.S. and Asia, and community cultural development.  He has worked on projects in various places including Manila and Los Angeles.  Dr. Reyes is currently completing a manuscript on the sociospatial production of Filipino America.  

Throughout his career, Dr. Reyes has worked with community-based organizations working on community health issues such as HIV/AIDS in Asian American and Pacific Islander communities and community arts development in Filipino American communities.  He has worked with organizations in Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco.
